Children in Dang share their vision for greener cities and communities

26 August 2026 | Dang, Nepal

Twenty-four schoolchildren from four local governments in Deukhuri Valley, Dang, participated in a drawing contest organised by UN-Habitat at the meeting hall of Lamahi Municipality, sharing their vision of greener and more inclusive cities and communities.

Held under the theme “Green Cities and Communities”, the contest brought together 10 boys and 14 girls from grades four to six from community schools in Lamahi Municipality and Gadhawa, Rapti and Rajpur rural municipalities.

The activity encouraged children to express their ideas about environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive communities. Their drawings portrayed communities powered by renewable and alternative energy, featuring clean rivers and air, open spaces, productive farmland, and abundant greenery, reflecting their aspirations for healthier and more sustainable places to live.

Ms. Bandana Sinha, Field Coordinator for UN-Habitat, opened the event by highlighting the significance of World Habitat Day and introducing its theme.

Graphic consultant Ms. Sadhana Poudel then guided the participants through practical drawing techniques, including colour combinations, brushwork and texture application.

Delivering the welcome remarks, Ms. Laxmi Yogi, Deputy Mayor of Lamahi Municipality, encouraged the children to think creatively about sustainable development, environmental conservation, and their responsibilities toward building better communities.

Teachers and participating students also shared brief remarks during the event. Mr. Jog Raj Chaudhary, Mayor of Lamahi Municipality, presented certificates to all participants.

Selected drawings from the contest have been submitted to the 25th World Habitat Day Children’s Drawing Contest organised by the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

The event was organised under the project “A Safety Net of Innovative Land Tenure Solutions for Near-Landless Sharecroppers and for a Greener Rural Nepal (L4ACT)”, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) of the Republic of Korea.
