RISK REDUCTION AND REHABILITATION
TOOLS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF SCHOOL AND HOSPITAL SAFETY FOR MULTI-HAZARDS IN SOUTH ASIA
The toolkit is a joint effort by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UN-Habitat ROAP) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) Asia Pacific Secretariat in partnership with the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Disaster Management Centre (SDMC).
The Governments of India, Nepal and Pakistan rendered a wide range of support. The Toolkit benefitted from technical inputs from ADB Nepal, UNDP India, UNESCO Pakistan, UN-Habitat Nepal and UN-Habitat Pakistan, WHO Nepal and the Nepal Risk Reduction Consortium (NRRC).
OPERATION POLICY GUIDELINE FOR HOUSING FOR URBAN POOR
UN-Habitat is providing the assistance on preparing operational policy guidelines to address the shelter needs of slums and squatter settlements in urban areas of Nepal. Operational strategy to address shelter needs of the urban poor, particularly sukumbasi. The document includes the Institutional mechanisms to operationalize the policies and strategies, financial
mechanisms to operationalize the policies and strategies, operational guidelines (action plans) to implement urban poor shelter programmes and the project proposal for medium scale project to address the shelter need of sukumbasis
SHELTER CLUSTER CO-LEAD
Under the UN Inter Agency Standing Committee, UNHabitat is identified as co-lead to shelter cluster. While IFRC is responsible for emergency response UN-Habitat takes the charge in recovery part. UN-Habitat in Nepal is supporting the cluster in designing contingency plan for shelter and keeps it prepared to support as deemed necessary. The support provided by UNHabitat
in association with UNDP for housing landless Koshi flood victims in 2009/10 and in 2012 Aurahi fire by demonstrating sustainable housing in Siraha is one of the examples promoted by UN-Habitat.
